MG1 means Malabar Garbled Grade 1 — cleaned ('garbled') black pepper of the standard Malabar export size and quality, the traditional benchmark for Indian pepper in world trade.

Should a grinder buy MG1 or a density grade?

If your recipe or customer specifies MG1, buy MG1. If you buy purely for grinding yield and flavour, density grades such as 550 g/L let you specify exactly the maturity you need, often at better value than size-selected grades.
